More than 200 persons were rescued from stranded cable cars in Jammu and Kashmir’s Gulmarg on Monday after a technical fault stalled the service.Several more were believed to be stranded as the Army, the police and the disaster relief force conducted a “large scale rescue operation”.Many of those stranded in the cabins were believed to be tourists. Gulmarg is a popular tourist destination.Rescue efforts are underway and all persons are safe, the Army’s Northern Command said.Sixty-five cabins had been stranded. As of 7.30 pm, over 200 persons had been rescued, the police said.Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s office said that the administration was monitoring the situation, adding that all cabins were intact and there was no need to panic.Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary is personally monitoring the rescue operation, and most of the stranded cabins have been cleared, the chief minister’s office said.— NORTHERN COMMAND - INDIAN ARMY (@NorthernComd_IA) May 25, 2026
