Citizens Voice Coimbatore (CVC) has expressed concern over increasing complaints from the public about unfair fare practices by drivers under app-based transport platforms such as Uber, Ola, and Rapido across many parts of Coimbatore. These app-based transports play a vital part of everyday life and is widely welcomed as they provide transparent fare systems, safer travel options, and reliable transportation facilities for many. However, CVC has been receiving several complaints regarding some drivers demanding extra cash beyond the fare displayed in the app after the ride and also passengers are pressured to provide extra tips. Another major concern is during peak hours or when rides are hard to get, many applications encourage passengers to increase the fare amount to convince the drivers. However, certain drivers still demand extra cash even after revised fares.Cancellation charges are often imposed when passengers refuse such demands and cancel the ride. Complaints regarding these issues are not being effectively addressed in several cases. CVC is also concerned that local transport authorities’ replies to such grievances is that these companies are “global companies” and therefore difficult to regulate locally.CVC stated that any corporate operating commercially within Tamil Nadu/ India must follow the laws and regulations of the country, irrespective of its international presence or digital business structure. Therefore, CVC urges the Regional Transport Authorities (RTOs), Transport Department officials, consumer protection authorities, and the government to ensure transparency and accountability in app-based transportation services. CVC suggests introducing an oil price-linked fare structure which would ensure fairness to both commuter and driver. And also, an additional provision may be introduced by enabling passengers to raise complaints whenever drivers demand extra fares.
