Social media companies have settled a case with a US school district that was due to go to trial next month in Oakland, California federal court, averting the first case of its kind.
The case, brought by a small rural Kentucky school district, is one of 1,200 similar cases that was chosen as a bellwether for the parties to see how their arguments fare before a jury.
In each of the cases, school districts are suing for compensation for costs they say they’ve incurred dealing with children’s mental health from social media addiction.

Facebook and Instagram parent Meta was the last to settle, on 21 May, days after Snapchat parent Snap, TikTok, and Google’s YouTube reached separate settlements.
