With attention fixed on the departures of Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson, the wider questions over uncertain futures elsewhere at Liverpool were, for a time, pushed into the background.Grown men were reduced to tears at Anfield, and Salah struggled to hold it all together himself, first at the final whistle after a 1-1 draw with Brentford and then during an emotional post-match send-off moments later.Robertson, although equally emotional, managed to maintain a degree of control as he smiled, applauded, and lapped up every second of his final outing. It was the type of touching farewell that both players deserved having cemented legendary status during nine trophy-filled years at the club.As they both stood in front of the Kop with their kids side by side, listening to one final rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone, it felt like a perfect ending. But while fairytales in football are sweet, they’re not the norm, and as supporters said goodbye to Salah and Robertson, it was hard not to think that others on the periphery were missing out. This weekend could have been the end of the road for others with contract negotiations still required and an even greater need for a refresh in the squad. It’s plausible that some of those in yesterday’s squad leave in the months ahead and miss out on the treatment of a proper Anfield send-off.Ibrahima Konate’s situation is the most confusing as he’s out of contract in a few weeks and still yet to extend or explain what happens next. Alisson, Curtis Jones, Joe Gomez and Wataru Endo all have one year left while Federico Chiesa surely needs a move in search of more minutes. Each of the above has enjoyed special moments and would therefore receive a rousing ovation if they timed their exit as well as Salah and Robertson. Yet equally, not every player wants or needs it, and football moves on quickly. When Liverpool supporters wished Firmino, James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita on their way after the final game of the 2022-23 season, heroes Fabinho and Jordan Henderson both left for Saudi Arabia weeks later without time to say goodbye.Ironically, during Sunday’s celebrations, there was time for Henderson to finally get his moment in the spotlight as he returned to the stadium for the first time. He enjoyed a quick lap of appreciation before swiftly moving aside and out of focus.Jordan Henderson returned to Anfield for the first time since leaving (Naomi Baker/Getty Images)Then as the Kop serenaded Salah and Robertson, they also made point to chant Alisson’s name, anticipating it might be the last time they see the Brazilian, with rumours of an exit gathering pace over recent weeks.Juventus are well known admirers but the goalkeeper will only consider a change of direction if Liverpool make it clear they are willing to let him leave, and at this stage there has been no indication of that.
