Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei is reportedly operating from an ‘undisclosed location’ through a tightly controlled courier network as fears of assassination continue to disrupt communication inside the Iranian leadership. According to a CBS report citing US intelligence officials, the extraordinary security measures are now delaying ongoing US-Iran discussions to end the war since it broke out on 28 February. The news outlet reported that Iranian officials authorized to negotiate with the Donald Trump administration have struggled to communicate within their own government system.“This is why you see people saying things like, ‘The supreme leader has agreed to the framework,’ or ‘We’re waiting to hear back on the final deal points.’ Every piece of information he receives is dated and there’s a lot of latency to his responses,” one official tells the network. The report further states that even top Iranian government officials do not know Khamenei’s exact whereabouts and have no direct way of reaching him. Instead, messages are relayed through an elaborate network of couriers intended to conceal the supreme leader’s location.Earlier reports had suggested the current Iranian supreme leader suffered injuries during US airstrikes and required extensive medical treatment, including plastic surgery, and has not appeared publicly since assuming leadership in March.CBS News also reported that Khamenei is not the only senior Iranian official believed to be underground. According to the report, several leaders are spending extended periods inside bunkers while avoiding direct communication with one another due to security concerns.“Watching them try to figure out how to talk to each other is almost like watching a sitcom. They are completely exasperated,” one official says.
