MONTREAL — The 2026 Canadian Grand Prix began with a familiar scene. Two black and silver Formula 1 cars with green accents lined up next to each other for the sixth time this season, when accounting for sprint races. This time, George Russell started ahead of Kimi Antonelli in what felt like a high-stakes grand prix for the outside world.Antonelli, 19, had won the previous three races and held an 18-point lead in the drivers’ standings heading into Sunday’s grand prix. But Circuit Gilles Villeneuve has previously been a strong track for Russell, who took the win last year — a moment that was overshadowed by McLaren teammates Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri crashing while in a tight title battle of their own. That moment from the 2025 race, when the McLarens collided, hovered over the early laps as Antonelli and Russell tangled, with near misses and lead changes. But it wasn’t a crash that ended the hope of a Mercedes one-two finish or breathed life back into Russell’s title challenge. An engine failure ended Russell’s day, as Antonelli zipped away to secure his fourth consecutive victory this season. In a year when the technical regulations are under intense scrutiny, a thrilling battle unfolded as a younger driver reached new heights but evidently is still learning the balance between risk and reward.Meanwhile, the veteran who entered the season as the bookies’ favorite for the championship is learning how to weather a bout of bad luck and how to emerge from issues outside of his control.“If there’s one guy that I would choose in this paddock in terms of resilience and determination,” Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff said Sunday, “that would be George.”The first icy moments of the 2026 drivers’ championship battle began unfolding on Saturday.Russell secured pole for the sprint race, and Antonelli lined up right beside him.The fight began on Lap 5 of 23, as Russell went wide at Turn 10. Antonelli attempted to pass the Briton a lap later, going around the outside of the car at Turn 1. It’s an unusual overtaking spot, and Antonelli felt, “I think if you are well alongside, you can overtake pretty much anywhere,” calling it “hard racing” with how Russell defended his position.Russell didn’t give him extra space, and Antonelli went wide into the grass, later claiming over the team radio, “He pushed me off.”George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes battle during the 2026 Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal (Bryn Lennon / Getty Images)Wolff told F1 TV after the sprint race about that moment: “But is that a corner you would expect somebody else to leave the door open? Probably not. Nobody would have done that.”Several corners later, Antonelli tried to make a move past Russell again but lost the spot to McLaren’s Lando Norris. The Italian driver vented a few other times over the team radio, making one final remark after the checkered flag: “Yeah, if we need to race like this, then good to know.”Wolff replied, “Kimi, now is the fourth time to talk about this. We talk about this internally and not on the radio, OK?”
