Caleb Shomo, the frontman for rock band Beartooth, has come out as gay in a message to his fans. Shomo took to Instagram on May 23 to reveal “I am a proudly gay man,” and explained that “This is something I’ve been unpacking and reckoning with in my life for quite some time now.”
His announcement came after the release of Beartooth’s recent single and video, “Free,” which drew criticism from online trolls who were quick to criticise the video’s colorful template and Shomo’s changing style.
Beartooth is an Ohio-based band that started in 2012 with Shomo as the sole permanent member. The group’s sixth album, Pure Ecstasy, is set to be released on August 28, and the group will follow with a tour.

There’s been a lot of speculation surrounding my personal life as of late and I feel compelled to set the record straight before it affects those I love any further.
