Electricity poles, transformers and cables suffered extensive damage due to heavy rain accompanied by gusty winds in Yadgir district on Sunday.

Thunderstorms, accompanied by gusty winds and lightning, lashed Yadgir district between 12.30 a.m. and 2 a.m. on Sunday causing extensive damage, particularly to the electricity supply system.As many as five head of livestock were killed after being struck by lightning. The tin-roof of 13 houses were blown away in the gusty winds and four houses have been partially damaged across the district, sources in the district administration have confirmed.According to initial reports, 150 electricity poles and 50 transformers have been damaged, while power supplying cables have snapped in many parts of the entire district due to rain and strong winds.The officials of Gulbarga Electricity Supply Company (GESCOM), however, have yet to confirm the exact damage.Electricity supply in both urban and rural areas was disrupted for hours. The restoration works in rural areas are almost completed and power is being supplied to a majority of affected parts. However, many rural areas still have no power supply as the staff and officers are in the field to set it all right.Deputy Commissioner Rahul Pandve has instructed officers to conduct a survey on damage caused due to rain and gusty winds and submit a report immediately.He has also directed the other departments concerned to be prepared to face any emerging situation and implement relief work effectively.
