The man accused of opening fire outside the White House has been identified as a 21-year-old man who believed he was Jesus Christ, according to officials. Nasire Best was gunned down after exchanging fire with Secret Service agents in Washington, DC on Saturday evening.Best was seen pacing up and down 17th St Northwest moments before he pulled out a revolver, sources told the New York Post.He approached the Secret Service booth and pulled out a weapon from his bag before unleashing a hail of bullets.The White House was immediately placed on lockdown as President Donald Trump was inside, although he was unharmed. After the chaos, Trump took to Truth Social stating that Best 'had a violent history and possible obsession with our Country’s most cherished structure.' The president, who appeared to be talking about the White House, added: 'Thank you to our great Secret Service and Law Enforcement for the swift and professional action taken this evening against a gunman near the White House, who had a violent history and possible obsession with our Country’s most cherished structure. 'The gunman is dead after an exchange of gunfire with Secret Service Agents near the White House gates. 'This event is one month removed from the White House Correspondent’ [sic] Dinner shooting, and goes to show how important it is, for all future Presidents, to get, what will be, the most safe and secure space of its kind ever built in Washington, D.C. The National Security of our Country demands it!' During the June incident, Best blocked an entry lane at the White House. He was detained by the Secret Service after claiming he was 'God' then committed to the Psychiatric Institute of Washington for a mental evaluation.The following month he was arrested once again after he attempted to enter a driveway at the White House. Afterward, a judge issued an order demanding he stay away from the White House grounds.While investigators have not formally established a motive, multiple law enforcement sources said Best was believed to be suffering from severe mental health issues and had claimed at times to be Jesus Christ.A preliminary investigation indicates that as the individual approached, he removed a weapon from his bag and began firing at posted officers,' the Secret Service said in a statement, which confirmed no agents were harmed.
