The first batch of returnees is expected to leave South Africa on Wednesday, while additional departures may follow depending on the outcome of the verification exercise.

Dozens of Ghanaian citizens have converged on the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria, South Africa, ahead of an official screening exercise for the ongoing voluntary repatriation programme.

The development comes amid the escalation of xenophobic attacks on African migrants in parts of South Africa by South Africans, where anti-immigrant sentiments have sparked concerns among several African communities.

Many of the Ghanaian nationals reportedly arrived at the High Commission premises in groups using commercial taxis and private vehicles, with some already lining up outside the diplomatic mission in preparation for the screening scheduled to begin on Tuesday, according to SABC News.

SABC shared photographs on its X handle on Sunday morning showing Ghanaians gathered at the High Commission, with credit given to journalist Luyanda Danca for the images.
