Former prime minister Alexis Tsipras on Sunday mixed soccer with politics in a reference to his political comeback with a new party he’s expected to formally launch in two days.
In a social media post, the former leader of the left-wing SYRIZA party displayed a football in the blue and wine red of Spanish champion FC Barcelona, which he said would be his party’s colors.
“We are building a team to win championships,” Tsipras said. “We’ve got the colors. The blue of our country and the red of our struggles.”
Tsipras will present his new party and its platform on Tuesday evening in Athens.
Tsipras, 51, led radical left SYRIZA to electoral victory in March 2015, at the height of Greece’s financial crisis, promising to end austerity imposed by international creditors in return for the huge bailouts keeping the country afloat. Instead, he signed up months later for even more austerity.
