State Highway 8 was expected to be closed for several hours.
One person has died after a two-car crash in Tekapo on Sunday afternoon.
The crash took place on State Highway 8 between Tekapo and Lake Pukaki in the Mackenzie District.
Emergency services were called to the crash on SH8/Tekapo-Twizel Road at 4.30pm.
“Sadly, despite best efforts, one person died at the scene,” Senior Sergeant Hamish Keer-Keer said.
There were no other injuries, he added.

A person has died after a crash in Waitakaruru, in the Hauraki District.
Emergency services are responding to a two-vehicle crash south-east of Hamilton that has closed part of State Highway 1.
The accident, on State Highway 5, was reported to emergency services around 6.20pm.
Police said reports of the crash came in about 9.50am on Sunday morning.
Police have reported a single vehicle crash, single occupant fatality in Otago.
A section of State Highway 1 is completely blocked this afternoon as police search the area for a person of interest.
