Unified champion Oleksandr Usyk survived the biggest scare of his heavyweight boxing career Saturday night when he scored an 11th-round stoppage victory over kickboxing champion Rico Verhoeven in front of the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt. It was the result that was widely expected ahead of the fight, given the vast difference in boxing experience between the two, but the manner of it was nowhere near what anyone predicted. In Verhoeven’s second professional boxing fight, he took the fight to Usyk (25-0, 16 KOs) from the first bell, boxing with a busy, almost frantic style that looked impossible to maintain for 12 rounds. In the opening round, Verhoeven (1-1) landed right hands to the head and body of Usyk, and continued to have success in the second. His unorthodox, unpredictable style seemed to have an impact on the Ukrainian, whose footwork was nowhere near as nimble as he usually displays. Any time Usyk had success of his own, Verhoeven was quick to smother him and use his size and weight (the Dutchman weighed in almost two stones heavier than Usyk) to lean on the champion.Verhoeven has worked with trainer Peter Fury on and off for 15 years, and solidly for the last six months, and it was clear to see the Fury style in his actions — the perpetual movement when not throwing, the feints and the footwork.
