Police and security forces have swarmed the area around the White House, which was sent into lockdown after “dozens” of shots were fired and two people were injured. The incident unfolded on Saturday evening, Washington time, with US President Donald Trump believed to have been present at the time as he worked to negotiate a peace deal with Iran.CNN reports two people were shot in an “encounter” with Secret Service personnel, citing a law enforcement source. Multiple news outlets have reported as many as 30 shots were heard.Fox News reports one of those injured was a shooter who approached the White House and opened fire and the second was an innocent bystander.Reporter Chad Pergram told Fox News a gunman approached the western side of the White House about 6pm, local time, “and brandished some sort of a pistol”.“He then fired toward the White House three times and the United States Secret Service, they returned fire … and they apparently took the gunman down,” he said.“Some time in this gunfire exchange a civilian on the street was struck by this gunfire and we do not know the condition of that person right now.”Selina Wang, the senior White House correspondent for the US’ ABC, has shared video on X of her filming a piece to camera when gunshots rang out. “I was in the middle of taping on my iPhone for a social video from the White House North Lawn when we heard the shots. “It sounded like dozens of gunshots. We were told to sprint to the press briefing room where we are holding now.”FBI Director Kash Patel said on X: “FBI is on the scene and supporting Secret Service responding to shots fired near White House grounds – we will update the public as we’re able.”The US Secret Service said it was “aware of reports of shots fired near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW and are working to corroborate the information with personnel on the ground.
