It has been nearly three decades since Danyon Loader last stood on the Olympic podium for New Zealand swimming.
Since Atlanta in 1996, there have been near misses, moments of promise, and athletes who have come within touching distance. But the breakthrough has not come.
Lauren Boyle, Moss Burmester and Erika Fairweather have all finished fourth at the Olympic level. Lewis Clareburt continues to establish himself among the world’s leading 400m individual medley swimmers.
The talent is there. The performances are close. But close has not been enough.
As New Zealand builds toward this year’s Commonwealth Games and with the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games fast approaching, there is a clear shift underway.
