SportFootballHull City FCHULL CITY 1-0 MIDDLESBROUGH: Oli McBurnie scored the only goal of the game in stoppage time to seal the Tigers' place back in the top flight17:34, 23 May 2026Updated 17:46, 23 May 2026Hull City have been promoted to the Premier League in dramatic fashion as Oli McBurnie scored in stoppage time to see the Tigers past Middlesbrough and back to the top flight. It was only the second shot on target of a drab affair under the Wembley arch in searing heat. McBurnie finished from close range to send the travelling City fans into raptures.Yu Hirakawa crossed the ball in from the left flank and Boro keeper Sol Brynn could only parry the ball into McBurnie's path who couldn't miss with the goal at his mercy. It rounds off a dramatic fortnight following the Spygate scandal which ultimately saw Southampton expelled from the playoffs.READ MORE: Hull City team bus has window SMASHED ahead of Championship play-off final vs MiddlesbroughREAD MORE: Tonda Eckert condemned for 'deplorable' Southampton Spygate campaign as EFL release full verdictMiddlesbrough only learned they would be playing in the playoff final on Tuesday after Saints were sensationally kicked out by the EFL.Southampton appealed but that was thrown out on Wednesday evening giving Boro two days to prepare in the knowledge they would definitely be facing Hull under the arch.It came after a Saints intern was caught red-handed filming a Middlesbrough training session from behind a tree prior to the first leg of their semi-final at the Riverside. That game finished goalless, but Southampton won the second leg to book their place at Wembley before the EFL stepped in. Saints also admitted to spying on Oxford and Ipswich during the regular season.Hull had been preparing to face Southampton but changed tack when they discovered Middlesbrough would be taking their place in the final.Boro enjoyed more of the ball and territory but failed to fashion a big scoring chance and will remain in the Championship having blown automatic promotion and, bizarrely, lost twice in the playoffs. The Tigers are the first team to be promoted to the Premier League having finished sixth since Blackpool in 2010. It is their first return to the Premier League since being relegated in 2017 and their fourth top-flight stint this century. If Hull had lost at Wembley, Tigers owned Acun Ilicali confirmed pre-match that he would have taken legal action in wake of the Spygate drama."Our legal team says that we have to go for action, that's for sure," he told BBC Radio Humberside. "So we have no doubt about it. Here, all we want is justice. If justice is broken, nobody will enjoy football."If this action was so big that a team is out of the play-offs, why didn't they let them not play the semi-final, investigate and take Southampton out and put Wrexham in?Article continues below"Why is Wrexham out now? Put Wrexham in and continue the competition. For me, an eliminated team {being] put back - also our lawyers say this and that's their opinion too - is an incredibly wrong decision."Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
