A case was filed against Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajay Rai on Saturday for allegedly making abusive remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi during an event in Mahoba district, PTI reported.Rai rejected the charges and described the video of the incident as having been generated using artificial intelligence. The first information report against Rai was filed based on a complaint registered by a Bharatiya Janata Party worker, the news agency reported. As per the complaint, Rai attended an event on Friday in the Samad Nagar area, which had been organised by former Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee Secretary Brijraj Ahirwar.Rai arrived at the venue with a convoy of 15 to 16 vehicles and about 25 to 30 supporters, which obstructed a public road and affected movement in the area, the complainant alleged. The police and administrative personnel left their regular duties to maintain law and order at the venue, the complaint was quoted as having stated. The complainant accused Rai of using “abusive and objectionable language” against Modi during the event, claiming that the video of the remarks had been widely shared on social media. On Saturday, Mahoba Additional Superintendent of Police Vandana Singh told ANI that a video had come “to our knowledge through social media” in which Rai allegedly “obstructed government work by unlawfully gathering with his supporters…”Singh noted that Rai had also allegedly made objectionable remarks about the prime minister. The police officer told The Indian Express that the investigation would be conducted in accordance with due process and that the video of the incident would be sent for forensic examination.Rai, Ahirwar and about 25 to 30 unidentified supporters were booked under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita pertaining to wrongful restrain, assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of duty, unlawful assembly, promoting enmity between groups and intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace, the newspaper reported.Responding to the video, Chief Minister Adityanath said on social media that the “indecent, unparliamentary and unforgivable remarks” made by Rai about the prime minister reveal the “political bad habits” of the Congress. He added: “Congress has now reached the highest level of frustration, disappointment, frustration and mental bankruptcy. Now they are not even in a position to apologise to the countrymen.”Rai claimed that the video was AI-generated and aimed at tarnishing his image, The Hindu reported.“This video is generated by the IT [Information Technology] cell of the BJP through AI,” the Congress leader told the newspaper. “In my entire political career of over 35 years, I have maintained dignity in politics.”Rai added: “I went to meet the family member of a 16-year-old Dalit girl who faced atrocities by feudal elements, fearing the Congress’ continuous fight against injustice, the BJP is doing propaganda.”Rai had lost to Modi in the Varanasi Lok Sabha constituency in the 2014, 2019 and 2024 general elections.Edited by Nachiket Deuskar.
