No fewer than 90 people have been confirmed dead after a devastating gas explosion ripped through a coal mine in northern China, triggering a massive emergency response and renewed scrutiny of safety standards in the country’s mining sector.

The deadly incident occurred late Friday evening at the Liushenyu Coal Mine in Shanxi Province, a region widely regarded as the heart of China’s coal industry.

Chinese state media reported that the mine is operated by the Tongzhou Group.

The blast reportedly happened around 7:29pm local time while hundreds of miners were underground carrying out routine operations.
