One person was killed and more than 30 people hurt, including more than a dozen firefighters, after a fire led to an explosion at a dry dock facility Friday on Staten Island, according to police and fire officials.A fire was reported just before 3:30 p.m. at the facility on Richmond Terrace in Mariners Harbor, police said, and an explosion was reported about 45 minutes later. The New York City Fire Department said there was a fire in the basement of a small metal structure behind shipping docks, with two workers trapped.FDNY Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore said units arrived in six minutes to a smoky scene with limited visibility.Two people were pulled from the area and taken to nearby hospitals, fire officials said. One civilian died from their injuries.Shortly after firefighters arrived, the blast occurred. More than 30 people suffered injuries in all, most of whom are firefighters or EMS, Bonsignore said.Two first responders were taken to Staten Island University Hospital with injuries. A fire marshal was in critical condition, and a firefighter was in serious condition, NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani said at a news conference from the hospital. The mayor said neither suffered injuries considered to be life-threatening.Mamdani called it a “complex, fast-developing emergency situation” with crews from 70 fire and EMS units responding. More than 200 first responders were at the fire, which the mayor described as an active scene, though the flames were said to be under control as of 8 p.m.It was not immediately clear what sparked the flames.
