CALGARY—The province of Alberta is now within spitting distance of a vote on independence.
This fall’s referendum-on-a-referendum, as some critics are calling it, will be of “monumental importance,” Premier Danielle Smith says. Asking residents if they want to go forward with a binding referendum, it edges a province closer to an independence vote — and marks the first time the province in question isn’t Quebec.
