Andy Burnham took a gamble with the constituents of Makerfield when he told them that a vote for him would be a “vote to change Labour”.

The Greater Manchester mayor promised to give voters “the party back they used to know”.

His launch came a day after the Green Party candidate withdrew from the race, and it later emerged that he had shared social media posts which described an attack on ambulances run by a Jewish charity as a “false flag”.

Reform have also faced questions about their candidates’ alleged sexist and homophobic social media activity.
