A man’s behaviour at the scene of a fatal stabbing, including dancing and behaving oddly, attracted the attention of police. He was later found with a bloodied knife, and charged by police.
Aneli Helu Katea, 36, was found stabbed to death at a property on Great King St, Dunedin, on Friday, October 3, 2025.
The 25-year-old accused of the murder appeared before Justice Cameron Mander in the High Court of Dunedin this week.
Mander found the act proven, but the man, who has name suppression, was not criminally responsible on account of insanity. He remains in custody.
At the time of the killing, Katea, a father, was living in an abandoned building on Gt King St, while the man known only as ‘Mr A’ in the case’s summary of facts, lived a short distance away in a boarding house.
