The Coimbatore-headquartered Sankara Eye Foundation India entered the ‘Asia Book of Records’ on May 22, 2026 (Friday) for conducting the highest number of free eye surgeries under a single programme by an organisation in Asia.The foundation said it had performed 30 lakh free eye surgeries between March 2004 and 2026 as part of its community eye care initiatives aimed at eliminating curable blindness among underserved sections across the country.According to the organisation, its network currently performs nearly 1,000 surgeries a day through 14 centres spread across 10 States.Speaking on the recognition, R. V. Ramani said the achievement reflected the trust placed in the institution by patients and communities over the years. He said the recognition established the foundation as a leading provider of community eye care services in Asia.The recognition was presented by Riena Singh Khare to Dr. Ramani.
