The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (DCDRC), Coimbatore, has directed a motorcycle manufacturer and its authorised dealer in Peelamedu to pay ₹5 lakh compensation to a consumer who faced recurring defects in a Continental GT 650 motorcycle despite repeated repairs and replacement of parts over nearly three years. The commission recently, comprising president P. Dakshanamoorthy and member G. Suguna, held that there was deficiency in service and directed the opposite parties to jointly or severally pay ₹5 lakh towards mental agony, hardship and incidental expenses, along with ₹10,000 as litigation costs.According to the complaint, Uthresh G., an advocate from Coimbatore, purchased the motorcycle from Bharat Automotives in May 2022. Soon after the purchase, the vehicle reportedly developed recurring mechanical and electrical defects affecting components including the instrument cluster, key set, suspension system, throttle body, electrical system and silencers. The complainant submitted that the instrument cluster was reportedly replaced six times, while several other parts were also reportedly replaced repeatedly during the warranty period. Service records showed that the motorcycle reportedly remained at authorised workshops across multiple cities for more than 294 days cumulatively for repairs and inspection. The commission observed that repeated defects and prolonged repairs established deficiency in service and directed the parties to pay the compensation within two months, failing which the amount would carry 12% annual interest.
