Maiki Sherman has won Political Journalist of the Year at the 2026 NZ Media Awards, two weeks after resigning from her role as TVNZ’s political editor.

Sherman left her position after making headlines for her alleged behaviour at Parliament, in which she allegedly directed a slur at Stuff journalist Lloyd Burr.

“Well, well, well,” Sherman said, accepting the award to loud applause.

“I don’t think anyone had ‘Maiki Sherman resigns as political editor and Maiki Sherman wins Best Political Journalist of the Year’ in the same fortnight on their election card when it came to the bingo rounds, but there you go,” she said.

Addressing the past fortnight, Sherman explained the controversy had taken a toll on her.
