MANILA, Philippines — With several lawyers approaching the prosecution team to offer help in the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, public prosecutor and Manila Rep. Joel Chua said there is a need to filter applicants since there is a danger that they may be planted by the opposing camp.
In an online interview on Friday, Chua said that, as part of considering who the private lawyers are to take on the team, they will check whether they have experience in trial proper, as the impeachment proceedings must not be used as a practice ground.
But part of what they look out for, he noted, is the profile of a lawyer, as they may have been sent by Duterte’s side.
“Well, first of all, we are filtering who can join the team because, of course, we are looking at the lawyers who can really help us, especially those with extensive training and extensive experience in trial, because they cannot use the impeachment proceedings as a trial ground. We need people who can really provide a big contribution,” he said.
