BEIJING, May 22. /TASS/. China firmly opposes US plans to deploy Typhon intermediate-range missile systems in Japan, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Guo Jiakun told a news briefing.

"China firmly opposes the US deployment of intermediate-range missile systems in Asian countries," he said, calling the system a "strategic offensive weapon." Such actions harm the legitimate security interests of other countries, escalate military confrontation, and increase the risk of an arms race, he pointed out.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry also emphasized that Tokyo's willingness to deploy these systems indicates Japan's accelerated remilitarization and preparations "for a long war." Guo noted that this challenges the post-war international order and threatens to provoke new instability in the region. Beijing called on Washington and Tokyo to abandon such plans.

As Kyodo News Agency previously reported, the US military plans to deploy Typhon missile systems to the Japan Self-Defense Forces' Kanoya Air Base in Kagoshima Prefecture for exercises from June to September. Along with the Typhon missiles, HIMARS multiple launch rocket systems will also be deployed during the maneuvers.
