Schar's current deal runs out in the summer George Wood/Getty ImagesMay 22, 2026 Updated 5:04 am EDTFabian Schar, the former Switzerland international, has been offered a new contract by Newcastle United, head coach Eddie Howe said on Friday.Schar, 34, has not played for the club since January after sustaining an ankle injury against Leeds United which then developed an infection that required surgery. His current deal is due to expire this summer.Until recently, the expectation has been that Schar would leave Tyneside after eight years at the club, particularly with Malick Thiaw excelling in his preferred position as a right-sided centre-half.
Yet there is also a recognition that ahead of a summer where Newcastle’s squad is likely to be significantly overhauled, too much change can be difficult. Sources at the club have also indicated that Schar may now be more receptive to accepting a more limited role and a wage reduction.“I’ve had a few discussions with Fabby,” Howe told reporters ahead of Newcastle’s final match of the season away to Fulham on Sunday. “Discussions are now with Ross (Wilson, the sporting director) and his agent and we hope to come to a successful conclusion.“Fingers crossed. We want Fabian to stay. I think he’s got a lot to offer. I think we’ve missed him since he’s been injured. We’ve missed his distribution and his passing from deep has been a big miss for us, the way he accelerates our attacks.“We wouldn’t be keeping anyone that we didn’t feel could help the team. I think Fabian’s been unbelievable for us. Until it’s signed, it’s not done, but I still feel he has a lot to offer.”Newcastle are 11th in the Premier League, three points off Chelsea in the Conference League qualification spot.May 22, 2026Connections: Sports EditionSpot the pattern.
