The United States has approved a possible $108.1 million Foreign Military Sale to Ukraine for the sustainment of HAWK air defense systems and related support equipment, the US State Department announced. The main contractor for the project will be Sierra Nevada Corporation, based in Englewood, Colorado. In its statement, the State Department said the proposed sale would support US foreign policy and national security objectives by strengthening “the security of a partner country that is a force for political and economic stability in Europe.” Washington added that the package would help Ukraine address “current and future threats” by reinforcing its integrated air defense capabilities for self-defense and regional security missions. “The proposed sale of this equipment and support will not alter the basic military balance in the region,” the statement said, adding that the transfer would have “no adverse impact on US defense readiness.” What Is the HAWK System?
