With the new Android Automotive features announced during Android Show: I/O Edition, vehicles are gaining new AI capabilities. During Google I/O 2026, Volvo showcased the EX60 model with “predictive” Google Gemini. Gemini will gain access to the vehicle's own cameras, among other things, to gain a better real-time understanding of the vehicle's surroundings.

“Hey Google, can I park here?”

Volvo writes in its announcement that Google Gemini, using the camera – if the driver allows it – analyzes the surroundings from the vehicle's perspective. According to the company, the AI can be used to “understand traffic signs and road markings even better.” For example, information about nearby sights or restaurants can be retrieved during a holiday trip abroad.

Furthermore, parking is intended to become easier and more comfortable, Volvo explains. The AI can read and interpret signs in real-time, helping drivers to “recognize time restrictions, no-parking zones, and required parking permits, as well as find out the applicable fees.”

One of the first vehicles with AI functions appears to be the Volvo EX60 model: it “forms the ideal platform for exploring the future of contextual driving experiences,” explains Alwin Bakkenes, Head of Global Software Development at Volvo Cars. The presented concepts are intended to provide a first glimpse into “how contextual AI experiences will become part of the everyday driving experience in the future,” it continues.
