Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) torched President Donald Trump’s nearly $1.8 billion “Anti-Weaponization Fund” that critics are calling a slush fund for Trump allies. In an interview with Spectrum News 1’s Washington correspondent Reuben Jones on Thursday, Tillis called the fund “stupid on stilts.”“It will invariably put us in a position where your taxpayers dollars and my taxpayer dollars could potentially compensate someone who assaulted a police officer, admitted their guilt, got convicted, got pardoned and now we are going to pay them for that. That’s absurd,” he said. On Monday, the Department of Justice announced it was launching the fund as part of a settlement to resolve Trump’s lawsuit against the IRS over the leak of his tax returns. The fund, which is facing severe bipartisan backlash, is expected to give payouts to Trump allies who claim mistreatment from the Biden-era Justice Department, including the rioters who stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.“The American people are going to reject this” fund, Tillis said, before calling the “front line” of Jan. 6 rioters “thugs that should still be in prison and be in prison as long as the law would allow.”Slamming the fact that they are eligible for the payout, the GOP senator decried the fund as “the definition of tyranny.” “When you take money from me to give to a purpose that I vehemently disagree with, that’s tyranny, and that’s what that account is,” he added. Tillis also criticized acting Attorney General Todd Blanche for not ruling out the chance that people who assaulted police officers on Jan. 6, 2021, would be eligible for compensation from the fund, calling his comments earlier this week “objectionable” and “insulting.”Watch Tillis’ full interview here.
