The PUNCH Newspapers has been honoured for its sustained role in Nigeria’s fight for democracy, receiving an award at the unveiling of ‘The NADECO Story,’ a book authored by the General Secretary of the National Democratic Coalition, Ayo Opadokun.

The recognition was one of several honours presented at the event held at the Shell Hall of the MUSON Centre, Onikan, Lagos, on Wednesday.

At the event, pro-democracy activists, journalists, diplomats, civil society groups and institutions relived memories of the June 12 struggle and celebrated contributors to Nigeria’s democratic journey.

The award recognised The PUNCH for its “steadfast reporting of our activities which sustained the voice of freedom in the face of repression, intimidation and closure” during the pro-democracy struggle against military dictatorship.

The event featured tributes to media organisations, journalists, activists, military officers and institutions that played significant roles in resisting authoritarian rule between 1994 and 1998.
