Two Democratic state lawmakers from New York are the latest to urge their congressional counterparts to oppose negotiations that could block states from passing new AI safety laws.

The two state lawmakers behind New York’s new artificial intelligence law are demanding that House Democrats representing their state reject an early stage bipartisan push to override state AI safety rules with a federal standard.
In a letter sent on Thursday to each House Democrat from New York, state Assemblymember Alex Bores and state Sen. Andrew Gounardes, both Democrats, urged their congressional counterparts to “oppose federal efforts to preempt state regulations that protect residents from the harms of artificial intelligence.”
