Hawaii is continuing to build out its public EV charging network, and the state just opened a new NEVI-funded fast charging site at Kapalua Airport on Maui.
The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT), along with Sustainability Partners (SP) and community leaders, recently held a commissioning and blessing ceremony for the new site, which is now open 24/7.
As of April 2024, HDOT received 32 NEVI-compliant and Buy America-compliant Tritium chargers. The Kapalua Airport location is HDOT’s third commissioned charging site funded through the federal National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program. The state has been allocated more than $17 million in NEVI funding over five years.
The new airport-located charging station includes four 150 kW DC fast chargers equipped with NACS and CCS1 connectors. The station also includes canopy lighting and security camera infrastructure.
Hawaii’s NEVI rollout is taking a different approach: Sustainability Partners, a public benefit company, is funding, deploying, and maintaining all of the state’s NEVI charging stations through its Electric Vehicles as a Service (EVaaS) model.
