Most employees state that they adequately meet the requirements of their job, however, an extremely large percentage works in a field unrelated to their studies and qualifications and professional training remains more of an exception than a rule.

This is what a new nationwide survey by the Labor Institute of the General Confederation of Greek Labor on the qualifications and skills of employees in the private sector shows.

The main conclusion from the survey, the largest to date in the country on this issue, is clear: The problem of the Greek economy is not only whether employees have skills, but mainly whether businesses and the country’s production model can utilize them.

The most important finding concerns the relationship between studies and work, as three out of seven employees (42.6%) state that their field of studies or qualifications is little or not related to their current job. Only 44.2% respond that there is great relevance.

These findings capture a stark reality, where for thousands of workers – and especially for younger people – entry into employment is done on the basis of need and not on the basis of utilizing expertise.
