In a symbolic gesture, the City of Paris has approved awarding honorary citizenship to Narges Mohammadi, the human rights activist and 2023 Nobel Peace Prize laureate. The conferral of citizenship to this human rights defender was approved by a unanimous vote from all political factions within the Council of Paris.
Due to the ban preventing Narges Mohammadi from leaving Iran, the title was announced in Paris in the presence of her French attorney, Shirin Ardakani, and two members of her family: her daughter, Kiana Rahmani, and her husband, Taghi Rahmani.
The 54-year-old Narges Mohammadi won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 for her continuous struggle against execution, gender discrimination, and her defense of human rights and freedom of expression. Over the past 25 years, she has been arrested 14 times and sentenced to a combined total of more than 44 years in prison.
A statement issued by the Narges Mohammadi Foundation notes that her health condition deteriorated severely following her re-arrest in December 2025 and the issuance of a new prison sentence in February, culminating in a dangerous heart attack on May 1. The foundation alleged that this condition was caused by the systematic deprivation of medical care while in prison.
