Casemiro has played his last Manchester United game and will not appear against Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday, Michael Carrick has confirmed. The 34-year-old had said farewell to the Old Trafford crowd by thanking the fans in a short speech after playing 79 minutes of United’s final home game of the season, the 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest last weekend. The Brazil international’s appearance was his 35th of the campaign, his 160th for the club and Carrick confirmed in a press conference it will be his last, ahead of his summer departure.“Case, I kind of decided last week would be his last game. That went well as we could have hoped,” Carrick said. “He’s been fantastic. I’ve said a lot about Case, it was decided it could be a good time for him to finish.“This club is about bringing young players through, getting the balance right going into games like this, it’s depending on how the game goes to make the most of that. We’ve got some really good young players to take the next step.”Such a move is not without precedent with Jamie Vardy’s final Leicester City game a season ago coming in the penultimate match of the campaign. He scored his 200th Leicester goal in that game, which was his 500th outing for the club.Casemiro joined United in August 2022 after three La Liga titles and five Champions Leagues with Real Madrid. He has since helped the club to a League Cup in 2023 and the 2024 FA Cup.This season he has scored nine goals and provided two assists, as United secured Champions League qualification after a two-year hiatus from Europe’s premier club competition. On Monday Casemiro was named in his third World Cup squad as Carlo Ancelotti chose the midfielder for the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico.“It felt the right time for Case, it was decided as part of that. It was the right time,” Carrick added.“There is an element of balance of the last game, we’re not done, the season is not done, we’re really conscious of that. There is a real balance between trying new things and evolving. The biggest thing is we’re really conscious to respect this last game and what it stands for.”The Athletic reported on Thursday that he is nearing a move to Inter Miami, despite LA Galaxy holding his Major League Soccer discovery rights.United are third, safely six points above Aston Villa in fourth, as they visit Brighton’s Amex Stadium on Sunday.
