MANILA, Philippines — The camp of former House Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez has maintained that the case against online channel Peanut Gallery Media Network (PGMN) is not an attack on press freedom, noting that responsible journalism is even encouraged.

In an ambush interview on Thursday after the arraignment of PGMN founder Franco Mabanta, who is accused of trying to extort P350 million from Romualdez, lawyer Elaine Atienza was asked about details surrounding the hearing.

Atienza, who is Romualdez’s spokesperson, declined to give any information about the hearing as they were instructed by the court not to do so under the sub judice rule. But when asked about PGMN’s insistence that Romualdez’s case is an affront to press freedom, Atienza said that anyone is free to report on supposed anomalies, as long as they follow the process.
