Standing under the bright lights of the Face of Africa stage, Chisamo Elisha Nantamu felt something he had never quite experienced before. The 21-year-old medical student from the University of Nairobi had just made history as the first male to ever win the title, and the moment was almost too big to process.

“I would look for a big word, but simply I will just say ecstatic, it is quite exciting,” Chisamo says. “I feel like a trendsetter.”

Just a year ago, none of this seemed possible. Chisamo was a footballer, playing under URAFC back in Uganda, with no plans to step onto a runway. But when he arrived in Kenya, someone saw something in him that he had not yet seen in himself. That someone happened to be Paula Lukela, who would later become his counterpart as the female Face of Africa.
