Bruce Willis' daughter, Rumer, has shared an insight into her dad's condition after the legendary actor was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia in February 2023Daniel Bird Assistant Celebrity and Entertainment Editor12:30, 21 May 2026Updated 12:35, 21 May 2026Bruce Willis' daughter, Rumer, has shed light how his personality changed after his dementia diagnosis. The legendary Hollywood star was first diagnosed with aphasia in March 2022.But just a year later, it was announced that Bruce had been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia. FTD is a group of brain disorders which damages the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain. And unlike Alzheimer's, which affects memory loss, FTD alters an individual's personality, behaviour and language. Now, Rumer, 37, has shared how Bruce altered after his diagnosis. The Die Hard star, 71, currently receives round-the-clock care for his condition and lives separately from his wife, Emma Heming Willis, and their young daughters."I'm so grateful I get to see him," Rumer said in a new interview. "Even though it's different now, I'm so grateful."Speaking on The Inside Edit podcast, she continued: "There's a sweetness. He's always been this kind of macho dude, and there's like a - fragile is not the right word, but - just a tenderness that maybe being Bruce Willis might not have allowed him in a certain way."While FTD is said to be one of the rarest forms of dementia, Rumer, who is the daughter of Bruce and actress Demi Moore, said that her dad's condition is more "prevalent" than she had initially realised. She recalled: "It's wild to me. So many people come up to me now and they say, 'My uncle had FTD. My dad had this.'" Speaking last year, Rumer shared a heartbreaking update, explaining that there are times when her father doesn't recognise who she is.She revealed on Instagram: "The truth is that anybody with FTD is not doing great. But he's doing okay in terms of somebody who's dealing with frontotemporal dementia, you know what I mean?"The only way I feel like I could answer that in a way that's like he's doing great... How do I say this? It's like those parameters don't really work anymore in my mind, so this is an interesting question."I'm so happy and grateful that I still get to go and hug him. I'm so grateful that when I go over there and give him a hug, whether he recognises me or not, that he can feel the love I've given him, and I can feel it back from him."That I still see a spark of him, and he can feel the love that I'm giving, and so that feels really nice." Earlier this year, Bruce's wife, Emma, said that the actor "never connected the dots" about his condition. She said: "Bruce never, never tapped in. I think that's like the blessing and the curse of this, is that he never connected the dots that he had this disease, and I'm really happy about that. I'm really happy that he doesn't know about it."Speaking on the Conversations with Cam podcast, People reported that Emma added: "It's where your brain can't identify what is happening to it [so sufferers] think this is their normal. People think this might be denial, like they don't want to go to the doctor because they're like, 'I'm fine, I'm fine,' actually, this is the anosognosia that comes into play. It's not denial. It's just that their brain is changing. This is a part of the disease."The Looper star remains "very much present in his body", but as he has transformed with his dementia, his whole family have adjusted accordingly. Emma concluded: "We have progressed along with him. We've adapted along with him. He has a way of connecting with me, our children that might not be the same as you would connect with your loved one, but it's still very beautiful. It's still very meaningful. It's just different. You just learn how to adapt."Article continues belowLike this story?
