A New Zealand Defence Force spokesperson said it was responding to a mayday broadcast from a sailing vessel in the Cook Strait earlier on Thursday afternoon.
“The vessel with one person on board has reported becoming lost while en route to Wellington Harbour.”
Navy ship HMNZS Taupō and an Air Force P-8A Poseidon aircraft were assisting with the search, alongside Coastguard and the Grassroots Rescue Helicopter.
