Adeyanju noted that Gumi’s sustained promotion of terrorism, public support and defence of terrorists’ activities attract a minimum of 20 years imprisonment under Nigeria’s Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.
Human rights lawyer and activist, Deji Adeyanju, has called for the prosecution and 20-year jail term of controversial Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, over his promotion of terrorism and repeated public support and defence of bandits.
Adeyanju noted that Gumi’s sustained promotion of terrorism, public support and defence of terrorists’ activities attract a minimum of 20 years imprisonment under Nigeria’s Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.
The lawyer made the call on Thursday while reacting to a viral video in which Gumi was heard speaking about Fulani herders and defending armed bandits amid worsening insecurity across the country.
In the video, Gumi, who has repeatedly defended bandits and maintained that the Nigerian government should negotiate with terrorists, reportedly said Fulani herdsmen “are going nowhere,” insisting that “they are part of us and we are part of them. We must live with them.”
