Britain faces a €32.4 billion defence budget shortfall until 2030, according to the report

Britain must urgently strengthen its military posture in the Arctic and High North or face growing risks to its homeland security, according to a new report by the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI).

The study, released on Thursday, argues that the UK’s current military commitments in the region remain “modest and ad hoc” despite the Arctic becoming one of the world’s most strategically important regions as tensions among NATO, Russia and China intensify.

“The Arctic and High North have moved from the periphery of European security to its centre – and the UK stands at a crossroads,” the report states. “The UK has a once-in-a-generation opportunity to translate years of rhetorical commitment to the North into genuine strategic leadership, binding the Alliance’s most critical regional plan to European – rather than solely American – hands.”
