When a dog attacks someone, the owner may be held liable for various costs arising from the incident.
In South Africa, the phrase “beware of the dog” has become so normal that many people barely notice the sign anymore.
It hangs on gates in suburbs, townships, complexes and farms alike. But when a dog bite actually happens, especially involving a neighbour’s pet, panic quickly replaces familiarity.
One moment you are walking past a gate, visiting a friend, jogging in your street or collecting a delivery. Next, you are bleeding, shaken and unsure what to do next.
And for many South Africans, this fear is not abstract.
