May 21, 2026 — 7:43pmOnly one of Collingwood legend Scott Pendlebury’s special match-worn jumpers from his record-breaking 433rd match on Saturday will go to auction in a major twist after weeks of debate about the riches he will collect.Pendlebury will eclipse North Melbourne great Brent Harvey’s all-time VFL/AFL games record against West Coast in front of a pro-Magpies crowd expected to be north of 90,000 at the MCG.Scott Pendlebury in one of his commemorative 433rd game guernseys.AFL PhotosThe 38-year-old will wear up to 12 jumpers in the match, all with his No.10 in gold – which the AFL approved late last month – and it was speculated they could each be worth about $25,000 at auction and $300,000 in totality. However, Pendlebury set the record straight on the Ausmerican Aces podcast on Thursday.“There will be one jumper that I have to [hand over] with the AFL [and] SE Products, as per the arrangement with those guys,” Pendlebury said on the podcast.“The club gets four that they can put in archives, museum, whatever they want to do with it. I get what’s left, which will be going to family, Mum and Dad, one each for my [two] kids, one to both my brothers, and then that’s it, so none of mine will be found elsewhere.”Discussion in the lead-in to Pendlebury’s milestone game centred on the financial windfall he was set to receive, after the Magpies approached the AFL asking to pass their share of merchandise proceeds to Pendlebury. This masthead understands that was a club initiative and not driven by the Pendlebury camp. The league ticked that arrangement off because of the historic circumstances. The AFL-AFLW collective bargaining agreement entitles players celebrating significant milestones to 65 per cent net revenue from commercial memorabilia, but Pendlebury will receive closer to 90 per cent.None of that amount will count towards Collingwood’s salary cap. This development sparked criticism, including that Pendlebury’s case could create a loophole for clubs to manipulate the salary cap and potentially pay players with impending milestones a lower salary in exchange for helping them cash in from memorabilia instead.Former St Kilda forward Nick Riewoldt was critical on Channel Seven of the AFL again making “rules on the run”.Three sources who work in list or player management, and spoke to this masthead on the condition of anonymity to discuss the matter more freely, echoed Riewoldt’s sentiments. They also felt it was realistic that a club might pitch to a player agent a scenario where their client received a lower base salary in a season they played a major milestone match.“I think it’s opened Scott up to ridicule and to criticism from other football fans. Not Collingwood – they’re not going to turn on him, obviously,” Riewoldt said.“But other football fans and even other clubs to the point that people are saying that this is turning into a GoFundMe for Scott Pendlebury. When you have a salary cap, you can’t allow this, if you’re the AFL, to this extent. This is just rules on the run and a free-for-all.”The AFL does not believe its decision to approve Pendlebury’s larger memorabilia share will create a situation where clubs try to cheat the system, and it will audit the Collingwood champion’s financial return.Beyond the one-off jumpers, there will be separate tribute guernseys available to be bought, as well as other SP433-designed memorabilia, a special edition black-and-white football, scarves and a Pendlebury bobble head.Pendlebury has also spruiked commemorative bottles of wine, sold by Elite Estate, for his record-breaking game that can be purchased. The Magpies renamed an existing one-game membership package, now called a “Pendleship”, which costs $43.30 and includes a general admission ticket and basic club merchandise. Pendlebury will not receive anything from these memberships or other gate receipts for the match.Puma also paid an undisclosed amount to rename the AFL Record “The Scott Pendlebury” for round 11.Keep up to date with the best AFL coverage in the country.
