McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown has said that interest from rival Formula 1 teams in his drivers would come as zero surprise, but that he wouldn’t trade his line-up for any other on the grid.Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris combined to win McLaren back-to-back constructors’ championships for the first time since 1991 through 2024 and 2025, as well as both fighting for last season’s drivers’ title.Norris clinched his maiden crown at the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi, with Piastri ending the year third in the standings, just 13 points behind his teammate.Earlier this month, Autosport reported that Piastri, 25, who is only in his fourth F1 season, had emerged as Red Bull’s top target if Max Verstappen were to leave at the end of this year. This is despite Piastri being under a long-term contract with McLaren, having agreed an extension that was announced on the eve of the 2025 season.Piastri finished third in last year’s F1 World Drivers’ Championship (Mark Thompson / Getty Images)“I would imagine there’s not a team on the grid that wouldn’t want to have Oscar and Lando driving for them,” Brown told The Athletic in an interview when asked about Red Bull’s possible interest in Piastri.“My general view, contracts aside, (is) our job is to create an environment where our drivers don’t want to drive anywhere else, or for that matter, our employees or our sponsors don’t want to sponsor another team.“My job — our job — is to create an environment where you go, ‘Well, you’ve got a contract.’ Yes, we have that anyways, for the record.“But you don’t want to hold someone because you’ve got a piece of paper, you want (them) to go, ‘This is the team I want to race with, the team I want to be on, the team I want to be a mechanic on, the team I want to sponsor.’“That’s what I want to do, try and create that environment. I think there’s a lot of talent inside McLaren that other racing teams would like to have.”Piastri made his F1 debut with McLaren in 2023 and has been a critical part of its upswing in performance through that period, winning nine grands prix to date and impressing with his level of performance.Piastri failed to make the start in either of the first two races of this season, spinning en route to the grid in Australia and then suffering an electrical issue in China. But he led the opening stages of the Japanese Grand Prix and finished second behind Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli, only losing the lead due to a safety car period, in what he felt was one of his best F1 performances to date.Asked if he felt he was in the right place at McLaren to win a world championship in the future, Piastri told The Athletic: “Yes, I think I am.“Last year, or even just through the years, I think the trust and the proof of how we can take a car, and almost a team in some ways, that has potential and actually realise that potential, is more than enough for me to see just what this team is capable of.“It’s shown me that in the next few years, or the next however many years, that we’re capable of staying at the front.“We’ve got all of the pieces of the puzzle that we want and that we need, and now it’s about trying to go out and execute and see how many championships we can win.”Verstappen leaving Red Bull could cause seismic change in the F1 paddock (Lluis Gene / AFP via Getty Images)Brown said in the interview that his dream is to “be a world championship (winning) team racing with two world championship (winning) drivers” and that he was now “halfway there.”He referenced McLaren’s history of having two title winners as teammates, which includes Alain Prost and Niki Lauda (1984), Prost and Ayrton Senna (1988-89), and Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button (2010-12). Brown said he felt “very confident” of achieving that by winning a world championship with Piastri.Brown has long stated his belief that Norris and Piastri form the best driver line-up on the grid, and said it was vital for them to stay together for the team’s future success.“The first thing on your shopping list is the best drivers in the world,” said Brown. “Yes, you’ve got to give them the equipment to get the job done, but I think the sport is so close, even if you have the best car, you’re not going to have an advantage where you’re not going to not need the best driver line-up to win the championship.“In all of our racing series, the number one goal is the best driver line-up that you can get. I wouldn’t trade ours for any other combination on the grid.”Piastri added that he was “very, very proud” to be part of McLaren and to have enjoyed so much success with the team so soon in his F1 career.“Those are opportunities that a lot of drivers never have that opportunity ever,” Piastri said. “(I’m) very grateful to have those chances already, and just the way we’ve gone about it as well.“I’ve very much felt welcomed from day one, and an important part of the success of McLaren, which is always a very nice feeling. Hopefully that success continues for a long time.
