May 21, 2026 — 12:05pmA loud bang and a horrible screeching sound was what a woman heard before she saw the body of a young mother who was allegedly hit and killed on a street after leaving a daycare centre, a court has heard.Kiesha Thompson, 23, was hit by a Toyota Landcruiser Prado while walking home on a footpath from a childcare centre in Daisy Hill, in Brisbane’s south, in July 2024.Police allege Kiesha Thompson, 23, was deliberately run down on the side of the road after leaving a daycare. One of her accused killers, Larissa Rita Mae-Leigh Sant, was allegedly told by her partner, Tyler Scott William James, to fit the SUV with false number plates and then drive the vehicle at Thompson, who was James’ ex-partner.Thompson died in hospital that night.James was committed to stand trial last month.Sant appeared via video link for her committal hearing at the Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Thursday, where she was represented by her solicitor Ken Mackenzie. One witness, Rachel Sok, who lived near where Thompson was allegedly hit, told the court she heard a loud screeching sound.“It was horrible, really really horrible,” she said. She said she heard a bang, and then saw a 4WD, which was on the wrong side of the road, speed off.“I looked back up again, and I saw the body and I made a call to triple 0,” she said.Another witness, Fiona Winterburn, told the court she was walking her dogs along Allamanda Drive and saw the vehicle swerving and heard a loud bang.“I just remembered looking up the street … I thought someone had hit the keep left sign because people do do that,” she said, explaining the car was travelling between 55 and 65 kilometres per hour.Ken Mackenzie, representing Sant, pointed to Winterburn’s description of the alleged driver to police.“You told police, ‘I remember seeing a dark hood over someone’s head, I believe I could see brown fluff on the … hood. The driver was wearing big dark glasses’,” he said.“You said to police after describing the articles of clothing, ‘I remember thinking silly women after seeing the driver’.Mackenzie asked if it was the case she thought it was a woman because of the clothing. Winterburn said the features of the person’s face led her to believe it was a woman driving. The hearing continues.Start the day with a summary of the day’s most important and interesting stories, analysis and insights.
