A person has been detained after a “suspicious item” was found at Avalon Airport in Geelong, forcing the airport to be evacuated.Emergency services were called to Avalon Airport shortly before 6am on Thursday. Police are conducting a safety check at the airport. “The building has been evacuated and area cordoned off as a precaution while the investigation is ongoing,” a spokesperson said.Reports suggest there was a bomb scare.An airport spokesman said a person had been detained after a security scare. “The domestic terminal at Melbourne Avalon Airport was evacuated this morning following the identification of a suspicious item during the screening process,” they said per the Herald Sun. “Victoria Police attended and an individual has been detained.”A police spokesperson told NewsWire the individual was detained by security before officers arrived.The airport warned of delays to Brisbane as a result of the security scare. “At this stage, passengers are being advised that, due to safety precautions, delays are expected to the Brisbane flight this morning,” the airport spokesman said. “We will provide further updates regarding any additional delays as more information becomes available.”One person told radio station Bay 93.9 they were turned away when arriving at the airport. “Everyone is being turned away and asked to park on the road,” the caller said. “There’s cars everywhere outside.” More to come
