Plans to increase the duty on petrol and diesel this Autumn have been scrapped and put back until at least the New Year.

It’s the latest move in a flood of policies from the government, designed to send the message that it will do whatever it can to cut the cost of living.

Other ideas, such as a price cap on basic foods, have run straight into fierce criticism from retailers.

And the government is still wrestling with whether to allow more oil exploration in the North Sea.
