Five-year-old Kiara Mohan died after being crushed by a municipal skip bin at the Suryaville municipal flats in Jasmine Crescent, Newcastle, north-west of Durban, on Friday.
The child was playing outside the flats when the bin allegedly toppled over during what began as a game of hide-and-seek.
The Post reported that her mother, Lisa Mohan, said Kiara had been playing with other children while she watched her from nearby before briefly stepping inside to attend to her infant child.
She said she later became concerned when Kiara did not return home and went looking for her behind the flats, where she discovered the overturned skip bin.
